Stones of Remembrance
Joshua 4:4-7

God realizes that we often forget what He has done for us.

In Deuteronomy 6:12, Moses issued a final warning to Israel just before they entered the promised land: “Be careful that you do not forget the LORD, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.”

As we said yesterday, the Hebrew meaning of the word for memorial is “to remember.”  Given man’s propensity to forget, it is little wonder that memorials have played such an important role in Biblical history.

In Joshua 4:4-7, we read that Israel has reached the western bank of the Jordan River. Joshua commanded a man from each of the twelve tribes to take a stone from the riverbed and set them up at Gilgal as a memorial.

This memorial was to be a reminder to their children and future generations that God had dried up the waters of the Jordan River, just as He had the Red Sea. It was to remind them of God’s might and power and His faithfulness to ALL generations.

Later in Joshua 4, we read about a second memorial of stones being set up in the middle of the Jordan River where the priests had stood. These memorials were a witness and a lasting testimony that they were God’s people who should fear the LORD forever.

May we remind ourselves and our children (and even your grandchildren!) of God’s power and faithfulness because of what He has done for us.

In Christ,
Jonathan
