Psalm 42
Put Your Hope in God

The Psalmist was despondent because he was separated from Jerusalem and not able to publicly worship God. He was experiencing a spiritual depression that some describe as “a dark night of the soul.”

He describes his soul as downcast and disturbed. He feels God has forgotten him. He is in mourning. He is oppressed by his enemy. He is taunted by his enemies to the point where his “bones suffer mortal agony” (v.10).

Many Christians deal with discouragement, even becoming despondent. This can make it difficult to navigate even the regular routines of life. As Charles Spurgeon said, “When trouble gets into the heart, every other trouble seems to be magnified, and it is hard to bear up against even the ordinary trials of daily life” (Spurgeon's Collected Sermons, Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit).

The prophet Jeremiah said, “Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?”(Jeremiah 20:18, NIV).

However, in his time of despair, the Psalmist found strength in God. We do too.

Isaiah 61:1 (NIV) – “The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”

I am praying that you turn to the Lord for whatever strength you need today.

Expecting God’s Best,
Bro Rob
